The Black Hills of South Dekota became popular when gold was found during the gold rush of the 1870s.

Trained by Henri LeBeau a French goldsmith, S.T. Butler opened the first Black Hills gold manufacturers in 1878.

After dividing into two companies in 1919, both were acquired by Ivan Landstrom in 1944 and 1995. Landstrom's Original Black Hills Gold Creations still runs today.

Their unique tri-color jewellery is very distinctive. Featuring grapevines and leaves with yellow, rose and green gold. It is said to have originated with Henri LeBeau. Once lost and near starvation, he found life-saving grapes and designed the jewellery for good luck. This distinctive style requires intricate handcrafting. It became the official state jewellery in 1988, requiring production within the Black Hills to bear the name.
