This is a beautiful amulet made by the British Museum. It is a replica moulded from the original amulet; a piece in their collection of Egyptian antiquities.  Egyptian, XIIth Dynasty about 1950-1800 BC.

The original piece is made of thin sheet gold hollow on the inside. This replica is made from copper and has then been plated in 18ct gold.

 

Metal oyster-shells were a popular amulet in the Egypt of the Middle Kingdom. The hieroglyphic inscription is the name of King Senusort (Sesostris) in a cartouche is not considered to be authentic and was thought to be added at a later date.

 

This is a great and very wearable piece of jewellery.
