Pinchbeck is an alloy of copper and zinc mixed in proportions so that it closely resembles gold in appearance. It was invented in the early 18th century by Christopher Pinchbeck, a London clock- and watch-maker.

It was predominantly used at that time in good quality affordable ‘travel jewellery’ as gold was only produced in 18ct and theft was at a high.

It started off being completely transparent and as advertised but over time some unscrupulous dealers started passing it off for gold so it became thought of as a cheap imitation for gold.

It fell out of use from around the 1850s when in 1954 9ct gold was introduced as standard.

It has become quite rare and collectable today.
